French and foreign students voted (42,8%) for photo #5 taken in Novaya Zemlya archipelago (Russian Federation) by Alexander GRIR for AFP. A photo, taken on October 31, 2018, showing polar bears feeding at a garbage dump on the remote Russian northern Novaya Zemlya archipelago, a tightly-controlled military area where a village declared a state of emergency in February after dozens of bears were seen entering homes and public buildings. Alexander GRIR, for the AFP, wins Gaze into the mind of 15 year olds 2019.

Reaction of Marielle Eudes, AFP Director of Photography: “Will it get used to seeing wandering polar bears, hungry, rummaging through garbage? Incursions are increasing in northern Russia as their habitat and food supply is degraded by climate change and melting ice. We saw this year on the outskirts of cities, as in Norilsk where one of them wander several days.”
Andreas SOLARO’s photo of protesters waving placards and a tarpaulin bearing the image of young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg at a protest in Rome against global warming came in second with 10,2% of the vote.
The photo of Geoffroy VAN DER HASSELT of the arrow and the bell tower of Notre-Dame en feu, taken on April 15, 2019 in Paris, closes the podium with 6,2% of the votes.
If the goal of the device is to allow each student of 3rd to look at the news throughout the world, it is also and above all to take the pulse of a generation that will make the democracy of tomorrow, guarantor of freedom!
